April is officially here, and with the water temperatures steadily climbing into the low 80s, the offshore bite in Key West is nothing short of explosive. While we’ve had some lingering spring breezes creating a moderate chop, the blue water action is heating up as pelagic species move through our waters in massive numbers.
Pelagic Report: Mahi-Mahi and Sailfish Take Center Stage
The "bread and butter" species for April is undoubtedly the Mahi Mahi (Dolphin).
We are seeing a huge upswing in schoolies and some larger bulls starting to show up along the weedlines and color changes.
Sailfish:
Action remains in high gear. We are seeing schools of tailing sails pushing through as they migrate, often in roughly 150 feet of water.
Blackfin Tuna:
There has been an "explosion" in aggressiveness from Blackfins recently. They are consistently being found over deep-water structures.
Wahoo:
While we are nearing the end of peak season, some high-speed trolling is still yielding quality fish, especially around the full moon.
With the current conditions, we highly recommend booking at least a 3/4-day or full-day charter. This gives us enough time to find that distinct color change where the predators are hunting without rushing back.
